Dr. Sabina Wachira, PhD, is a Research Scientist at the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI), Centre for Traditional Medicine and Drug Research. She specializes in Natural Product Chemistry and drug discovery. Her research interests include drug discovery, bioanalysis, and nurturing the next generation of research scientists in these fields. Her work is strongly inclined toward non-communicable diseases, particularly cancer, and she has contributed to several cancer-related research projects. She leads several high-impact projects, including the mass production of vincristine and vinblastine from Madagascar periwinkle cultivated in Kenya—a groundbreaking initiative aimed at creating a sustainable local source of essential anticancer drugs. Her research also extends to Prunus africana and other culturally significant botanicals, advancing them from indigenous knowledge to evidence-based therapeutic solutions.
